VISC-1001 Course Library Guide

Setting a Working Thesis

Even before we look to books and articles, we may already begin to form a working thesis. A working thesis is sort of like a hunch about where your research is going. It is one way to make sense of your subject. It should be specific enough to guide your research but broad enough to change as needed.

For example, our previous encyclopedia research established that:

  • Monuments experience a figurative death over time
  • Akan terracottas have a complicated relationship to memory
These insights, combined with our keywords we have collected from our encyclopedia research, can help guide our library searches for books and articles.

Thematic keywords: Monument, memory, death
Object keywords: Funerary,
terracottas
