Biography

Nancy Paterson is a Toronto based electronic media artist working primarily in the field of interactive installations.

She graduated with her AOCA from Ontario College of Art (OCAD University) in 1985 and received her Ph.D (Dec 2009) in Communications & Culture from York University. Her thesis, "Bandwidth is Political: Reachability in the Public Internet" was nominated for the York University Doctoral Dissertation Award. Following her the completion of her Ph.D, she went on to post-doctoral research with a 2 year SSHRC award at the iSchool, Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. Her postdoctoral research paper, "Walled Gardnes: The New Shape of the Public Internet," was presented at the iConference 2012- February 7-10, 2012 in Toronto and was published in the iConference Proceedings in the ACM Digital Library.

As of June 2012, she is co-investigator on IXmaps research funded by the Office of Privacy Commission Canada with Andrew Clement Ph.D at the Faculty of Information University of Toronto. She is an Associate Professor at OCAD University teaching 'Time-Based Media' and has developed a course titled 'Creativity and New Media' in which students are required to work through various methodologies of creativity, at Seneca@York. She is faculty representative and chair of the Pension committee at OCADU and is also Facilities Coordinator at Charles Street Video, a a non-profit, artist-run media access centre providing production and post-production facilities for digital video and audio.
