What is Research: Asking Questions

Asking Questions

To further help in making sense of research models, it may be helpful to ask a central question at each stage of the research process:

For DEDUCTIVE Reasoning

  • try not to ask WHAT are the SPECIFICS of your case-study until you have fully explored general THEORIES or the CONTEXT; otherwise you will not have an appropriate frame through which to observe

For INDUCTIVE Reasoning

  • try not to ask WHY until you have fully explored your SPECIFIC case-study or the general CONTEXT; otherwise you may “jump to conclusions” or make false assumptions about what you observe
